Srinagar-Jammu highway closed on 6th consecutive day

Srinagar, January 26, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Kashmir Valley remained cut off from the rest of the world as Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained closed on the sixth consecutive day, today, due to recent snowfall and landslides in Ramban area. Over a thousand Kashmir-bound passengers are said to be stranded at Jammu due to the closure of the highway. Over 2,000 trucks, most of them carrying essentials to the Kashmir Valley have been stranded at various places on the highway.

Meanwhile, passengers stranded in Jammu due to the closure of the highway protested and demanded of the authorities that they be airlifted to Srinagar. “The authorities should airlift stranded passengers as there are women and children who are suffering badly,” the protesters said.

Many stranded families claimed that market prices of commodities have skyrocketed and there is no authority to put the rates in order. “Some of the shopkeepers are taking undue advantage of our miseries,” they deplored.

On the other hand, the occupied territory remains in the grip of cold weather. Srinagar city recorded minimum temperature of minus 1.8 degrees Celsiuson Friday night while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 9.7 and minus 14.0 respectively.

Leh town with minus 16.5 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 20.6 and Drass town minus 27.5 were the coldest places in the occupied territory. Jammu city recorded 3.7 degrees Celsius, Katra 3.2, Batote minus 3.0, Banihal minus 6.5 and Bhaderwah minus 1.0 as minimum temperatures.
