Tharoor Questions Delhi’s Role as Capital Amid Severe Pollution

New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has criticized the Indian government for its handling of Delhi’s escalating air pollution crisis, suggesting the city may be “uninhabitable” for three months each year.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Tharoor expressed his concerns in a post on X, noting that Delhi’s air quality is approximately five times worse than Dhaka, which ranks as the second-most polluted city worldwide. He described the situation as “unconscionable” and questioned the appropriateness of Delhi’s status as the national capital.

Tharoor highlighted his previous efforts to combat the air quality issue, mentioning stakeholder discussions that have been ongoing since 2015, but expressed frustration at the lack of progress. His comments arrive as Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) reached a season-high of 493, leading the Supreme Court to admonish authorities for their delayed implementation of pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
