UNISAME Calls for Higher Quality Standards in Pakistan’s SME Sector

Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) emphasized the need for Pakistan’s SME sector to meet international standards and achieve high benchmarks during their meeting to commemorate World’s Standard Day on October 14, 2024.

According to Union of Small and Medium Enterprises, President Zulfikar Thaver highlighted the importance of upgrading products and services to align with global market demands. He urged national institutions and stakeholders to focus on enhancing efficiency, productivity, safety, reliability, and quality. Thaver specifically called on the Pakistan Standards Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), PCSIR, and Plant Protection Department to adopt zero tolerance policies regarding deviations from product and service specifications.

Issues such as substandard fumigation medicines and the employment of inexperienced inspection and quality control staff were identified as significant challenges. Thaver also urged trade associations to conduct training sessions on quality control to ensure value for customers’ investments. Moreover, participants in the meeting expressed concerns over corruption and the unethical practices at ports, which they believe undermine the quality and value of exports.

The meeting ended on a call for stringent pre-shipment and phyto-sanitary inspections, and an overhaul of logistics and storage practices to support the potential increase in exports of agricultural products and general merchandise from Pakistan.
