United States Consulate hosts Iftar and night cricket match for 40 girls and their fathers from Lyari Town

Karachi, July 10, 2014 (PPI-OT): The US Consulate hosted an Iftar and night cricket match for 40 girls and their fathers from Lyari Town. Leading Pakistani sports figures, including Moin Khan, Faisal Iqbal, UroojMumtaz, Fawad Alam, Zaheer Abbas, Masooma Junaid and Fatima Saleem, offered a cricket clinic before the girls and their fathers took to the field.

“Ramazan means giving back to our communities,” said Michael Dodman, U.S. Consul General in Karachi. “The U.S. Consulate,” he said, “is thrilled to see Pakistani girls getting into the game.” Cricket exemplifies leadership, teamwork and respect, he added.

The 10-14 year old girls formed two teams captained by leading cricketers Moin Khan and Faisal Iqbal. Both teams demonstrated skill, sportsmanship and success. After the match, Consul General Dodman presented all the girls with cricket bats and balls. “We saw some truly amazing performances out there tonight,” said Dodman. “These girls really gave it their all. They clearly have what it takes to succeed, and not just in cricket.”

According to Consul General Public Affairs Officer Corina Sanders, sports diplomacy builds relations. “The universal passion for sports transcends language and cultural differences, bringing people together,” said Sanders. “Best of all, sports teaches leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that help young people succeed,” she said.
