United States Embassy delegation calls on Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi

Islamabad, November 15, 2012 (PPI-OT): A delegation of US Embassy headed by Deputy Counsellor for Economic Affairs Sarah M. Beran, Second Secretary Matan Meyer and Mr. Ayan Ali Khan visited IPO headquarter, Islamabad and called on Chairman IPO Mr. Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi who is also Member National Assembly of Pakistan. The Executive Director IPO-Pakistan Mr. Umar dad Afridi and Deputy Director IPO Nadia Zubair Shah were present on the occasion.

Matters pertaining to mutual interest specially relating to enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights came under discussion. The Chairman said that Pakistan considers Intellectual Property Rights as basic instrument for the promotion of healthy economic and social activities.

IPO-Pakistan has taken various initiatives for the awareness and promotion of IP culture in the country. Mr. Afridi specially referred the recently passage of IP Ordinance 2012, from National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan through which IPO-Pakistan would be able to take vigorous steps besides initiating several projects for strict implementation in IP area.

This initiative would not only empower the Organization to adopt solid steps for the improvement of service delivery system, but also help for up-gradation of Trade Mark, Copy Rights and Patent Laws, he added. Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi said that IPO-Pakistan has initially focused for the capacity building of enforcement agencies so that they may professionally contribute for the implementation and monitoring IP laws and regulations.

Chairman IPO-Pakistan also said that Intellectual Property is a vast area and IPO with the cooperation of WIPO and other UN agencies taking a number of steps for capacity building and sharing of knowledge. He expressed desire to enhance mutual coordination to get benefit from experiences of each other and there is need to explore possibilities in this context.

The Executive Director IPO-Pakistan Mr. Umar dad Afridi floated the idea of constituting joint working groups for protecting IP Rights besides exploring new avenues to enhance the working of IPO-Pakistan with assistance of stakeholders. He also briefed about the achievements of IPO-Pakistan in different disciplines.

Deputy Counselor for Economic Affairs Sarah M. Beran appreciated efforts of IPO Pakistan for institutional reforms as well as legislation to strengthen IP regime in Pakistan. She assured all possible assistance and cooperation for capacity building and skill development of IP officials and experts.
