Islamabad: Pakistani women police officers joined the U.S. Embassy Islamabad for a roundtable discussion on women in law enforcement agencies today in honour of International Women’s Day. The Narcotics Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy organized the event as part of its Women’s Police Program.
“As Quaid-e-Azam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah said, ‘No struggle can ever succeed without women participating side-by-side with men. Thank you to the women police in Pakistan for standing shoulder to shoulder with male police officers,” said Deputy Chief of Mission Richard Hoagland. “The work you do keeping Pakistan safe is a tremendous contribution to your community.”
The roundtable included American and Pakistani female law enforcement officers, criminal justice experts, and police trainers. They discussed challenges and opportunities for women police in Pakistan. Panellists leading the discussion were: Rose Byremo Olsen, Nordic Police Advisor; Brooke Williams, Political Officer, U.S. Embassy Islamabad; Sarwat Hamid Butt, Deputy Director Crime Circle Record Office, Federal Investigation Agency; Dr. Hina Jawaid Kalyal, Assistant Professor, National University of Sciences and Technology Business School; Simona Gallotta, Mission of the European Union.
The United States has been working with Pakistani law enforcement agencies to help build capacity and promote interagency cooperation through its Police Assistance Program for the past three years. The Women’s Police Program assists female police in their professional development by providing training, equipment, and infrastructure. To date, the U.S. government has allocated $5 million to the program. The program is currently running training programs in first aid and investigation skills in Islamabad, Karachi, Quetta, and Peshawar.
