We will continue technical, financial assistance to support Pakistan: Dan Rohrmann

Islamabad, September 12, 2013 (PPI-OT): Representatives of DFID and UNICEF met Mr. Baligh-ur-Rahman, Minister of State for Education, training and standards in Higher Education and discussed with him preparation for the UN General Assembly’s upcoming session. Pakistan is one of the six countries that will present its progress on MDGS in the UN General Assembly.

The representatives asked about the areas where Pakistan would need technical and financial support, and said that they would extend all out support to Pakistan.

The representatives included Atif Rafique (DFID), Joene Simpson (DFID), Dan Rohrmann (Country representative UNICEF), and Euphrates Gobina (UNICEF). Mr. Dan Rohrmann said that Gorden Brown, UN Special Envoy for global education is taking keen interest in promoting the cause of education in Pakistan.

He wants to increase and expand education in Pakistan by building more schools and bringing out of schools children into school. The representatives of DFID and UNICEF also appreciated the efforts made by the Government of Pakistan to accelerate progress on MGDS.

The Minister briefed the visiting delegates about his commitment and sincere efforts to promote education in the country. He assured them that the National Action Plan will produce positive results. Steps like literacy walk and providing standard education will help a great deal to reduce the dropout rate.

The Minister appreciated the efforts of donor agencies and the special interest of Gorden Brown to promote the cause of education in Pakistan. He thanked Gorden Brown for appreciating the recently launched National Action Plan in his letter to Governor Punjab, Chaudhary Sarwar. He said that Gorden Brown is keenly interested in the implementation of this plan.
