Paris: The World Heritage Committee (WHC) has approved the state of conservation report of the Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens during its 47th session at UNESCO Headquarters.
According to Radio Pakistan, the World Heritage Committee is responsible for monitoring the conservation of World Heritage sites globally and implements the World Heritage Convention of 1972. In its current session, the Committee reviewed the conservation status of Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens, offering recommendations for their preservation. The Committee acknowledged the high standard of work at Lahore Fort and commended Pakistan for its active involvement.
Pakistan’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Ambassador Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, expressed gratitude to the Committee and its advisory bodies for their ongoing support of the Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens as UNESCO heritage sites. She reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to protecting and conserving these sites, which hold universal significance.
The Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens were inscribed as World Heritage sites in 1981, making them one of Pakistan’s six World Heritage sites. Other sites include the Archaeological Ruins at Moenjodaro, Buddhist Ruins of Takht-i-Bahi and Neighboring City Remains at Sahr-i-Bahlol, and Historical Monuments at Makli, Thatta, Rohtas Fort and Taxila.
