Islamabad, On the occasion of World Water Day, the Secretary-General emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation over water resources as a pathway to peace, highlighting the exacerbating global crises of conflict, inequality, environmental degradation, and climate change. Water, being at the heart of these challenges, requires concerted action to manage shared resources sustainably, foster resilience, and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
According to United Nations Pakistan, the theme for this year’s World Water Day, “Water for Peace,” underscores the importance of water stewardship in bolstering peace, multilateralism, and community ties. With 153 countries sharing water resources, yet only twenty-four having cooperation agreements for all shared waters, the Secretary-General called for accelerated efforts to join and implement the United Nations Water Convention. This convention aims at sustainable management of shared water resources, essential for mitigating the risk of conflict, enhancing resilience to climate disasters, and advancing progress towards global goals of health, poverty reduction, inequality alleviation, and food and water security.
The message further highlighted the critical challenges facing the world, including rising sea levels, altered rainfall patterns, river flow reductions, and pollution. These issues not only threaten the availability of clean, fresh water but also heighten the potential for conflicts over dwindling supplies. In response, the call to action for World Water Day is a reminder of the power of cooperation in transforming water from a source of potential conflict into a force for harmony, stability, and prosperity for all.
