15 killed, 30 injured in IOK mishap

Srinagar, October 20, 2015 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, at least 15 passengers were killed and thirty others injured in a road accident in Udhampur district, today. The mishap occurred after an overcrowded passenger bus plunged into a gorge while negotiating a sharp turn at Dalsar in Ramnagar area of the district, officials said. The injured were shifted to the district hospital Udhampur and Government Medical College Jammu for treatment. The officials said that the death toll might increase since many passengers were in critical condition.

On the other hand, Srinagar-Leh Highway that connects Ladakh region with the Kashmir Valley was closed, today, following overnight snowfall at several places, a traffic police official said. Snowfall was recorded at Zojilla and other areas on the highway since last night, forcing the authorities to suspend traffic on the road. Srinagar-Leh Highway is the only surface link connecting frontier region of Ladakh and Kargil with the Kashmir valley. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the Zojila pass after the closure of the road.

Meanwhile, Drass and Meenmarg areas also experienced snowfall last night. Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia witnessed six inches of snow. Meanwhile, traffic has also been suspended on the Mughal road connecting Srinagar with Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu. One feet of snow was recorded at Peer Ki Gali on the road.
