Islamabad, November 29, 2012 (PPI-OT): Following the recent High Peace Council visit to Islamabad, Afghanistan-Pakistan relations were top of the agenda.
British Ambassador to Kabul, Sir Richard Stagg and visiting High Commissioner to Islamabad, Adam Thomson, were joined by some of Kabul’s young, bright leaders to discuss the peace process and regional relations.
Former Chevening Scholars, representatives from the Afghan Young Leaders Network, and organisers of the Afghan Youth Jirga participated in a lively and frank round-table discussion. Following the recent High Peace Council visit to Islamabad, Afghanistan-Pakistan relations were top of the agenda.
All attendees recognised that bilateral relations had been fraught with difficulties in the past, but the HPC visit offered some optimism for a new period of improved relations and action-orientated cooperation.
Kabul and Islamabad would have to work closely together to reduce insecurity in the border areas and to improve both countries’ prosperity. Adam thanked the group for its honesty and openness, recognising that some mutual mistrust lingered, but that there was optimism for the future
