Islamabad: A recent report by Kashmir Media Service has brought to light the escalating violence against women in India, emphasizing the country’s troubling record under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. While India annually celebrates National Women’s Day on February 13, the report highlights a grim reality where women continue to endure significant violence and abuse.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, India records a rape every 16 minutes, with a woman being gang-raped every 30 hours. Delhi has been labeled the “rape capital of the world,” where numerous incidents go unreported due to societal pressures and systemic shortcomings.
The report further highlights the dire situation for women in India, who are often treated as second-class citizens. New Delhi is noted as one of the most hazardous cities for women. It also draws attention to the Indian military’s use of rape as a weapon in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), a tactic allegedly aimed at quelling the Kashmiri struggle for their UN-recognized right to self-determination.
Since 1989, an alarming 11,265 Kashmiri women have reportedly been subjected to mass rape and molestation by Indian troops. In the same timeframe, 22,980 women have been widowed due to the actions of the occupying forces. Many women live as “half-widows,” with their husbands having disappeared at the hands of Indian troops. Human rights advocates and Hurriyat leaders have criticized India’s celebration of National Women’s Day, labeling it hypocritical given the conditions faced by women in India and IIOJK.
In a statement, All Parties Hurriyat Conference spokesperson Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas accused India of using the rape of women in IIOJK as a war tactic. He noted that the presence of over one million Indian troops in the region has made life unbearable for Kashmiri women and children. The international community is urged to address the widespread violence against women in India and IIOJK and take decisive action against these atrocities.
