Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party leader Waheed Para has voiced strong opposition to the recent amendments to the Waqf Act, describing them as an assault on India’s Muslim community that could lead to further marginalization.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Waheed Para, who represents Pulwama in the occupied Jammu and Kashmir region, expressed his concerns in a post on the social media platform X. He highlighted the precarious situation of Muslims in India, who, he said, are already among the most marginalized communities, facing incidents of lynching, demolition of homes and businesses, and imprisonment of their leaders without bail.
Para criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for what he perceives as an attempt to undermine Muslim religious and charitable institutions through the amendments to the Waqf Act. He argued that these changes, presented under the guise of reform, are a means for the government to seize control of Waqf properties, thereby exacerbating the marginalization of Muslims and increasing governmental control over their assets.
He further emphasized that the amendments could have particularly damaging effects on the occupied region of Jammu and Kashmir, where tensions remain high following the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A and the subsequent bifurcation of the state. Para’s comments underscore the ongoing concerns among Indian Muslims regarding their status and rights within the country.
