Anti-Muslim violence leads to imposition of restrictions in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, April 10, 2023 (PPI-OT):Restrictions have been imposed after anti-Muslim violence erupted in the Indian state of Jharkhand over a stage-managed incident of ‘desecration’ of Hindu religious flag in the state. The incident led to attacks on Muslims by Hindus at Shastrinagar in Jamshedpur area of the state. Shops of Muslims and auto-rickshaw were set ablaze by the Hindutva groups on Sunday evening.

“Prohibitory Orders under were clamped in the area,” Sub-Divisional Officer (Dhalbhum), Piyush Sinha, said. Tension had been brewing in the area since Saturday night when members of a local organisation found that a piece of meat was tagged to a Ram Navami flag, police claimed.

The situation turned violent on Sunday evening when a shop was gutted, leading to brick-batting from both sides. A mob also set on fire an auto rickshaw, owned by a Muslim. SSP Prabhat Kumar said adequate police force has been deployed at Shastrinagar to maintain law and order.
