Srinagar: The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has paid tribute to the martyred Huriyat leader, Muhammad Maqbool Butt, who was executed by the Indian government on February 11, 1984, at Tihar Jail in India.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, APHC spokesman Advocate Abdul Rashid Minhas shared that imprisoned APHC leader Maulvi Bashir Irfani, in a message from IIOJK Jail, honored Maqbool Butt’s legacy and stressed the necessity for legal action to repatriate Butt’s remains to Mazar-e-Shuhada in Srinagar.
Minhas highlighted the obligation of the Indian government under international law to return Butt’s remains to Kashmir. He affirmed the commitment to continue Butt’s mission until it reaches its conclusion.
Other Hurriyat leaders, including Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sopori and Bashir Andrabi, also paid homage to Butt, recognizing his role in inspiring Kashmiri youth in the pursuit of freedom. They expressed pride in the leaders who have sacrificed for Kashmir’s struggle.
The leaders reiterated their demand for the return of Butt’s remains and urged the United Nations and human rights organizations to pressure India on this matter.
Former APHC-AJK Convener Muhammad Farooq Rehmani called Butt’s execution a “judicial murder” and appealed to the UN to address the Kashmir issue at the Security Council, aiming to facilitate a plebiscite in Kashmir.
Meanwhile, a conference in Brussels, organized by Kashmir Council Europe, commemorated the martyrdom anniversaries of Butt and Shaheed Afzal Guru. The event featured speakers such as KCEU Chair Ali Raza Syed and other prominent figures, who emphasized the enduring legacy of these martyrs and their sacrifices.
