Benazir Income Support Programme is a model social safety net programme for world to follow: Marvi Memon

Islamabad, December 02, 2015 (PPI-OT):Following the best international practices and employing technologically innovative solutions, BISP has emerged, within a short span of time, as a model social safety net programme for the world to follow. Delegations of different countries like Nigeria and Afghanistan have visited BISP to study the operational procedures of the organization.

This was stated by the Minister of State and Chairperson BISP, MNA Marvi Memon, in her welcome note, during an event organized at BISP Secretariat under “Sisters in Success” initiative. BISP had invited Nobel Peace Laureate, Ms. Tawakkol Karman as Chief Guest of the event. Members of civil society, BISP officials and a large number of BISP beneficiaries were present on the occasion.

Ms. Tawakkol Karman is a Yemeni journalist, politician and senior member of the Al-Islah political party, and human rights activist. She leads the group “Women Journalists without Chains,” which she co-founded in 2005. She is a co-recipient of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first Yemeni, the first Arab woman and the second Muslim woman to win a Nobel Prize and the second youngest Nobel Peace Laureate to date.

The purpose of the event under “Sisters in Success” initiative was to provide an opportunity to poor woman beneficiaries for interaction with the international woman leader which would encourage them to stand on their feet. The concept of “Sisters in Success” focuses on international women leaders joining hands with Pakistani elite women role models and finally and most importantly, with BISP beneficiary women, who have risen from poverty. Soon a grand symposium of such role models will be organized which will be used for the awareness, empowerment and projection of the poor beneficiaries of the BISP.

Ms. Tawakkol Karman, during her address, appreciated the contribution of BISP in the welfare of the marginalized segment of the society and the fast pace at which the organization is growing. She encouraged the poor beneficiaries to break the shackles of poverty by getting advantage of the social and financial assistance provided by BISP. She gave them a message of hope and steadfastness which will help them to come out of the vicious circle of poverty.

Chairperson BISP, on the occasion, said that BISP through cash transfer and other initiatives aims to give dignity, empowerment and meaning to the lives of more than 5 million beneficiaries as envisioned by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. “Sisters in Success” initiative is another step towards implementing this vision.
