Karachi Mayor Announces Multibillion-Rupee Initiatives to Tackle Water Crisis

Karachi, In a significant announcement, Mayor of Karachi and Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Corporation, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, declared a series of projects aimed at addressing the persistent water shortages affecting the city. A notable initiative includes the construction of a new canal from Hub Dam, intended to enhance the city’s water supply capabilities significantly.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the new canal project, estimated to cost 12 billion rupees, will facilitate an additional 20 million gallons of water per day to Karachi, specifically benefiting the districts of West, East, Kemari, Lyari, and others. The mayor highlighted that this project, part of a broader 77 billion rupee initiative submitted to ECNIC, underscores a collaborative effort between local and provincial governments to fulfill commitments to the residents, alleviating water scarcity issues effectively.

During a press conference held at the headquarters of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, Mayor Wahab outlined the details of the project, which includes the rehabilitation of the existing canal system. He expressed confidence that these efforts, supported by the Sindh government and the Pakistan People’s Party leadership, will bring substantial relief to the citizens.

Further enhancing the city’s infrastructure, Mayor Wahab mentioned additional projects, including the development of sewage systems with an investment of around 12 to 13 billion rupees. He also discussed improvements to the city’s expressways and advocated for legislative action against the use of plastic bags to prevent drainage blockages.

The mayor’s comprehensive approach, focusing on urgent water supply needs and long-term infrastructural improvements, reflects a strategic effort to address Karachi’s challenges head-on, promising significant improvements in the daily lives of its residents.
