U.S. Ambassador Blome Launches Methane Emission Reduction Initiative in Pakistan’s Dairy Sector

Islamabad, U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, today inaugurated a workshop focused on reducing methane emissions from the dairy sector, emphasizing the initiative’s alignment with global climate change mitigation goals. The workshop, held in Islamabad, forms part of the U.S. commitment to fostering climate-focused investments in developing nations, particularly those significantly impacted by climate changes, such as Pakistan.

According to Embassy of the United States of America, Ambassador Blome highlighted the critical role of this initiative in the broader U.S.-Pakistan “Green Alliance,” aimed at promoting sustainable growth through management of natural resources. The workshop aims to develop a proposal to reduce methane emissions from dairy farming by nearly half by 2030, which will be submitted for funding to the Green Climate Fund. This effort aligns with the global objective of maintaining temperature rises below 1.5 degrees Celsius as outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement.

With one of the largest livestock populations globally, Pakistan’s dairy sector is pivotal in achieving these methane reduction targets. Ambassador Blome also noted the historical partnership between the U.S. and Pakistan, starting from the Green Revolution in the 1960s to current investments in clean energy and sustainable agriculture, underscoring a continued commitment to Pakistan’s resilient future.

The workshop brought together various stakeholders to mobilize financial and technical resources to tackle this pressing environmental challenge, with the dual goal of enhancing the dairy sector’s efficiency and meeting global climate commitments.
