Chairman NTC Commits to Address Tariff Issues in Upcoming Federal Budget

Karachi, Chairman of the National Tariff Commission (NTC), Naeem Anwar, has committed to addressing concerns raised by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) regarding import/export tariffs, anti-dumping duties, and other countervailing measures. The issues, highlighted during Anwar's visit to the KCCI, will be reviewed and potentially rectified in the Federal Budget for 2024-25.

According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Anwar urged the KCCI to provide a detailed written submission of their concerns and budget proposals promptly. He emphasized that all proposals sent to Islamabad are reviewed by the NTC, which analyzes their implications and, if deemed beneficial for the economy, forwards them to the government for consideration in the budget.

During the meeting, which was attended by various representatives from the business community including KCCI President Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh and Vice President Tanveer Barry, Anwar detailed the NTC's obligations under the NTC Act 2015. He stated the commission's dedication to enforcing laws aimed at preventing unfair trade practices and supporting domestic industry growth through coherent policy measures.

The discussion also covered the specific challenges faced by industries such as paper, packaging, and automobile sectors. Anwar acknowledged these difficulties and advised direct consultations with the NTC in Islamabad to explore possible solutions. Further, he responded to inquiries about the impact of anti-dumping duties, highlighting their role in protecting domestic industries and their five-year imposition period, which could be adjusted based on economic needs.

The meeting concluded on a hopeful note, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the NTC will incorporate KCCI’s suggestions into their recommendations for the upcoming budget, fostering favorable economic conditions.
