Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif Advocates for Enhanced EU-Pakistan Cooperation

Lahore, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif met with the European Union Ambassador H.E Dr. Riina Kionka to discuss strengthening ties between Punjab and the European Union. The meeting focused on a variety of developmental and environmental initiatives, including efforts to combat climate change and promote economic cooperation.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the discussions covered the ongoing and proposed projects funded by the European Union in Punjab, aimed at human development and environmental sustainability. Chief Minister Sharif outlined the extensive measures Punjab is taking to address climate change, including the launch of eco-friendly metro buses and a comprehensive ban on plastic bags. The government has also established a permanent Smog Control Unit and implemented a modern Vehicle Inspection and Certification System to reduce vehicular emissions.

Ambassador Kionka commended the efforts of the Punjab government, particularly in the areas of climate change mitigation and economic development. She highlighted the European Union’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economy through initiatives like the GSP Plus, which facilitates enhanced trade relations and investment between the EU and Pakistan. The discussions also touched on improving the export of textiles and rice from Punjab to European markets, with a mutual interest in technology transfer and infrastructure improvement to achieve sustainable economic growth.
