Karachi, The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has declared it will not contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir, positioning its stance as a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) regime, which it accuses of dictatorial governance. This decision is part of a broader effort to consolidate opposition votes and challenge the BJP’s dominance in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, CPI-M leader M Y Tarigami articulated the party’s intention to thwart the BJP, accusing it of eroding the democratic and fundamental rights of the Kashmiri populace. He called for a united front among local political entities to prevent the dispersion of anti-BJP votes and to ensure the defense of the region’s political and civil liberties.
The CPI-M’s boycott aligns with the strategy of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), a coalition seeking to counter the BJP’s policies, notably the controversial abrogation of Article 370. This coalition has been vocal in criticizing the central government’s approach towards Jammu and Kashmir.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections, set to occur from April 11 to May 19, 2024, are thus becoming a focal point for political dissent and alliances aiming to challenge the current administrative paradigm in the region.
