Farmers Announce New Protest March to New Delhi

Patiala: A group of 101 farmers is set to march to New Delhi from Punjab’s Shambhu border point with Haryana on January 21 as part of ongoing protests.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the announcement comes amid efforts by the protesting farmers, led by fasting leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, to unite with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). The SKM previously organized significant protests against the central government’s farm laws in 2020-21.

In a related incident, Pritpal Singh, a 35-year-old farmer from Kapurthala, experienced an epileptic seizure while participating in a fast with 111 other farmers at the Khanauri border. He received medical assistance before continuing his fast.

The group of 111 farmers began an indefinite fast on Tuesday at the Khanauri border, despite tight security and movement restrictions imposed by the Haryana administration.

Farmers associated with the SKM (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders since last February, when their initial march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher criticized the central government for not addressing their demands, which include legislation for minimum support prices for crops, as they prepare for the January 21 march.

Concerns are growing over Dallewal’s health as his fasting has reached the 52nd day, with risks of “multiple organ failure” being reported by fellow protesters.
