Karachi, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has emphasized the need for a significant overhaul in the country’s engineering sector. During a review meeting of the Engineering Development Board (EDB), the Minister critiqued the board’s performance and outlined a vision for stimulating innovation, competitiveness, and investment in the engineering industry.
According to Press Information Department, the meeting, held on April 3, 2024, featured a comprehensive briefing by EDB’s Chief Executive Officer, Raza Abbas Shah, on the board’s functions, accomplishments, ongoing initiatives, and future plans. Minister Hussain urged the EDB to adopt a more proactive and modern approach, advocating for a revised policy and regulatory framework to foster industry growth and attract both domestic and international investment.
Highlighting the EDB’s shortcomings in meeting its foundational goals, Hussain stressed the importance of technology transfer and its adoption to modernize manufacturing processes, boost productivity, and maintain global market competitiveness. He also pointed out the critical role of the EDB in enhancing the export potential of Pakistan’s engineering goods and services, suggesting improvements in market access, participation in trade exhibitions, and export incentives.
The Minister directed the EDB’s CEO to develop and present a future development strategy, along with proposals to eliminate obstacles impeding the progress of Pakistan’s engineering industry.
