Foreign Secretary praises Pakistani journalist’s determination to ensure a vibrant and free press

Islamabad: In his meeting with Acting Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar today, Thursday 23 June, the UK Foreign Secretary, Mr William Hague discussed the concerning situation facing journalists in Pakistan following the recent abduction and killing of Syed Saleem Shezad and the assault on Waqar Kiani.

Following the meeting the Foreign Secretary said:

“All countries deserve a free and independent press. As I said at the time, I was shocked to hear of the abduction and killing of journalist Syed Saleem Shezad. I was very concerned to hear more recently that Waqar Kiani, who has worked for a UK newspaper, was assaulted. I raised the issue with Minister of State and I welcome her commitment to a judicial commission. It is vital that those responsible are brought to justice.”
