Handwara Residents Protest Over Prolonged Water Shortage

Srinagar: Residents of Handwara, in the Kupwara district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, are protesting against government inaction following a severe disruption to their water supply. The local community has been without adequate drinking water for days, prompting public demonstrations demanding immediate resolution.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the protests were centered in Zargar Mohalla and Iqbal Colony in Main Town Handwara, where demonstrators voiced their discontent with the persistent water shortages that have not only impeded their access to drinking water but also affected their daily hygiene and sanitation needs. “We are suffering immensely due to the lack of drinking water,” a local resident reported, expressing the community’s frustration.

Officials from the water department have recognized the issue, attributing the shortage to a technical problem in the main service line. Despite assurances, the water supply has yet to be restored, leaving residents anxious and hopeful for a swift solution to restore their access to essential services.
