Hijab-Wearing Women Confronted by Mob at UP Fair

New Delhi: It was just another evening at the bustling fair in Milikhan Jahanpur village of Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, when a group of Muslim women wearing hijabs became targets of hostility from a mob last week.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, as the women walked past a tea stall, a group of Hindutva men began shouting slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram” and “tel lagake dabur ka naam mita do babar ka,” hurling abuses and taunts at the women. The mob’s chants grew louder, capturing the attention of other fairgoers, but bystanders remained silent.

The confrontation escalated when one of the women, Fatima, a college student, stood her ground, asserting her right to wear a hijab. Her defiance, however, only seemed to provoke the men further, until an elderly shopkeeper intervened, urging the mob to disperse and allowing the women to leave.

Despite filing a complaint, the women acknowledged the challenges of seeking justice amid a climate where such incidents are reportedly on the rise. The episode has sparked social media discussions, with activists calling on authorities to address the situation before it worsens.
