Dhaka, Following the lead of the Maldives, Bangladesh has become the next South Asian country to voice significant opposition against India through a burgeoning ‘India Out’ campaign. This movement reflects escalating tensions and anti-India sentiments among the Bangladeshi population and its diaspora, spurred by allegations of India’s interference in the country’s political affairs.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the campaign in Bangladesh has gathered momentum amid allegations from opposition parties that India had a hand in influencing the country’s recent elections, which saw Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid securing another term in office. This sentiment has been simmering for over a decade but reached a new peak with the public celebrations in Dhaka over India’s defeat in the Cricket World Cup final in 2023.
The aftermath of the elections, marked by substantial protests from the opposition, saw the ‘India Out’ campaign intensify, with calls for a boycott of Indian goods. This campaign bears resemblance to the movement in the Maldives, where anti-India sentiment played a significant role in President Mohamed Muizzu’s ascent to power. Following Muizzu’s directives, India commenced the withdrawal of its military personnel and surveillance aircraft from the Maldives, as reported by Maldivian media last month.
This wave of anti-India campaigns in South Asia highlights a growing resistance against perceived external interference in domestic politics and signals a shift in regional dynamics, potentially influencing future diplomatic relations between these countries and India.
