Jammu: A protest against the installation of smart meters in Kathua, within the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, was forcibly dispersed by police today. The demonstrators, including several women, had gathered to voice their opposition but were met with a police response that involved the use of batons and resulted in multiple detentions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesters, organized by the Jan Jagran Manch, had blocked the road outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kathua town. The demonstration escalated when police moved in to clear the area, resorting to a cane charge to disperse the crowd. During the clash, five protesters were detained.
The incident has highlighted the tensions surrounding the local administration’s push to install smart meters, which has faced resistance from various community groups in the region.
