Islamabad: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has called for the promotion of quality entertainment to foster positive approaches within the country. Speaking at the Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting, chaired by Senator Syed Ali Zafar, the Minister discussed the “The Motion Picture (Amendment) Bill 2024,” highlighting the need for more efficient decision-making processes in film certification.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister proposed that the authority to approve the Film Certification Board should be granted to the relevant minister, aiming to avoid delays caused by lengthy debates and the reformation of new censor boards. He stressed the importance of uniformity in film certification across the country, especially following challenges that arose after the 18th Amendment.
The Minister pointed out the Federal Government’s limited role in film importation, with provinces taking charge of certification under their own laws. He emphasized the need for enhanced coordination with provincial authorities and highlighted the success of Pakistani films internationally, particularly in Canada. His ministry, he noted, is committed to supporting films free from obstacles.
The committee approved the agenda concerning the censor board, reflecting a consensus on the proposed amendments.
Turning to the Pakistan Television Corporation, the Minister noted improvements in PTV’s screen quality and announced that PTV Sports has secured broadcasting rights for the Asia Cup for the next two years. Efforts are underway to further enhance PTV Sports’ performance, and PTV Home is under consideration for outsourcing. Meanwhile, PTV World is being revamped to meet modern standards, with merit-based initiatives being prioritized.
In addition, the Minister discussed the development of a business plan for the Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Company and addressed cases registered under the PECA Act during the meeting.
Attaullah Tarar concluded by sharing his ongoing dialogue with journalists, including discussions with Afzal Butt of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, underscoring his longstanding relationship with the press.
