Islamabad, Today, the city celebrates World Environment Day with a special event at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), featuring a documentary premiere, a musical performance by Khumariyaan, and dialogues with prominent climate activists.
According to United Nations Pakistan, the United Nations and the Aga Khan Foundation have organized this event to highlight the efforts of individuals combating climate change across Pakistan. The event is also supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, emphasizing the significance of sustainable environmental practices.
The celebration will showcase the premiere of “When the floods come,” a documentary by Nyal Mueenuddin that explores life along the 3000km stretch of the Indus River, highlighting the relationship between local communities and the environmental challenges they face. The musical group Khumariyaan will perform, paying tribute to the Indus River Basin, a central element of the ‘Living Indus’ initiative aimed at preserving the river’s ecological balance.
In addition to the film and music, the event will feature discussions with Sirbaz Khan, a noted Pakistani alpinist, and Abuzar Madhu, an artist and environmental advocate, who will share their experiences and insights on environmental activism. A Climate Marketplace will also be part of the festivities, offering insights into innovative environmental projects undertaken by the UN and the Aga Khan Foundation.
