Jammu: Today, the All Parties United Front (APUF), a coalition of various opposition groups in Jammu, organized a protest against what they term ‘anti-people’ policies enforced by the local authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the demonstration aimed to urge the restoration of statehood before the upcoming assembly elections, mandated by the Supreme Court to be held by September 30. Participants included prominent figures from the Congress, National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, and the Communist Party of India-Marxist. They gathered near the statue of Maharaja Hari Singh by the Tawi bridge, vocalizing their dissent particularly against a recent order that augments the powers of the Lieutenant Governor.
Congress leader Ravinder Sharma articulated the collective demand for the immediate reinstatement of full statehood as a precursor to the elections, emphasizing the broken promises of the BJP regarding statehood and timely electoral proceedings. The demonstrators displayed placards and chanted slogans advocating for the preservation of land and job rights, and the prompt conduct of the assembly polls.
National Conference leader Rattan Lal Gupta criticized the BJP’s stalling of the elections and expressed optimism that the forthcoming visit by the Election Commission would confirm the scheduling of the awaited electoral process.
