Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced plans for a civic reception to honor Arshad Nadeem, the Pakistani athlete who clinched the gold medal in javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. Nadeem’s historic victory, which marks Pakistan’s first Olympic gold medal in an individual event in over four decades, has ignited nationwide celebrations.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab praised Nadeem’s monumental achievement in setting new records with his throws of 92.97 meters and 91.79 meters, the longest and second-longest in Olympic history, respectively. This victory not only earned Pakistan its first gold medal in these games but also its first Olympic gold in individual events, a significant milestone since the bronze medal win by the national hockey team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

The mayor highlighted the added significance of Nadeem’s victory occurring in a final against Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the previous Olympic champion, showcasing a momentous occasion for sports rivalry and national pride. With this win, Nadeem has also placed Pakistan once again among the countries securing gold medals at the Olympics, bringing the nation’s total Olympic medal count to eleven.
