Geneva, A Kashmiri delegation held a protest at the United Nations office in Geneva to call for international intervention against India’s human rights abuses in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the delegation, led by Altaf Hussain Wani, included notable figures like Shameem Shawl and Advocate Parvaiz Ahmad Shah. They detailed the severe conditions under which political leaders, journalists, and activists are detained in India, often under stringent anti-terror laws, and highlighted the arbitrary detentions of thousands of Kashmiris since August 5, 2019. The speakers condemned the long-term detentions aimed at suppressing dissent and instilling fear among the Kashmiri population.
The group emphasized the deteriorating human rights situation since the unilateral revocation of Article 370 and 35A by India in August 2019, criticizing policies they claim are designed to change the demographic composition of the region. They called on the UN to press India to release all unlawfully detained individuals, including prominent Hurriyat leaders.
Altaf Hussain Wani also spoke at the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, focusing on the legal obligations to investigate unlawful deaths and the mistreatment of deceased individuals by Indian forces, describing such acts as potential war crimes under international law. He urged the international community to ensure accountability and justice for the families of the deceased.
