Bhopal: In a move that has attracted significant attention, the government in Madhya Pradesh, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has renamed eleven villages in the Shajapur district, replacing names that carried Muslim connotations.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the new names during a rally. This follows an earlier initiative in January when Yadav renamed three villages in Ujjain, his home district, aiming to replace Muslim-sounding names with ones reflecting Hindu-centric identities.
The changes include Nipaniya Hissamuddin, now Nipaniya Dev, and Dhabla Hussainpur, renamed Dhabla Ram. Other villages affected are Mohammadpur Pawadia, now Rampur Pawadia, and Khajuri Allahadad, now Khajuri Ram. The updated list also features Hajipur (now Hirapur), Mohammadpur Machhnai (now Mohanpur), Richhri Moradabad (now Richhri), Khalilpur (now Rampur), Unchod (now Unchavad), Ghatti Mukhtiarpur (now Ghatti), and Sheikhpur Bongi (now Avadhpuri).
This initiative is part of a broader trend within the BJP to remove Islamic influences from place names. Anil Firojiya, a BJP Member of Parliament from Ujjain, has called for similar changes in localities such as Begum Bagh, Anda Gali, and Top Khana. In Bhopal, some BJP leaders have suggested renaming the city to Bhojpal, claiming it was originally named after Raja Bhoj of the Parmar dynasty.
The renaming efforts have sparked concern among human rights groups and opposition leaders, who argue that these actions exacerbate communal tensions in a country already facing religious strife. Critics caution that removing Muslim heritage from place names is part of a broader strategy to alter historical narratives and foster a more divisive political climate.
