Srinagar, Authorities in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, have initiated a magisterial investigation into the custodial death of Imtiyaz Ahmad Pala, a local youth who died under suspicious circumstances after being detained by police. The inquiry seeks to clarify the sequence of events leading to Pala’s death, amidst allegations of mistreatment and torture.
According to Kashmir Media Service, police detained Pala at a checkpoint on Monday, where he allegedly tried to flee upon noticing the security setup. During his apprehension, police claim to have found a substance resembling heroin in his possession and stated that Pala confessed to liaising with foreign terrorists in the area. He was subsequently charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
However, the situation escalated when Pala developed severe health complications while in custody, leading to his death at a local hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. The family of the deceased has accused the police of torturing him during his detention, prompting the ordered magisterial probe to investigate these claims thoroughly.
The body of Imtiyaz Ahmad Pala has since been returned to his family for burial, as the community and local authorities await the findings of the inquiry to bring clarity and potential justice in the wake of this incident.
