Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized the importance of electing representatives who will challenge the Indian government’s decisions made on August 5, 2019, concerning the autonomy of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Speaking at an election rally in Islamabad, South Kashmir, Mufti described the current elections as crucial for advocating the rights and freedoms of the people of IIOJK. According to Kashmir Media Service, Mufti criticized the national policies that have led to increased surveillance, detentions, and general hardship for the people of IIOJK. She highlighted the ongoing issues such as electricity shortages, rising unemployment, and police scrutiny of youth. Mufti’s call for reversing the 2019 decisions is part of her broader appeal to restore the rights of her constituents and oppose what she terms as New Delhi’s efforts to “enslave” the people of Kashmir.
