Mehbooba Mufti Criticizes Enforcement of Outdated Law in Kashmir

Srinagar, Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly condemned the use of the Enemy Agents Ordinance against the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, labeling it a severe infringement of constitutional rights.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mufti’s criticism followed an announcement by Indian police that the ordinance would be applied to Kashmiris suspected of supporting pro-freedom activists. This colonial-era law subjects individuals to arrest and prosecution on the mere suspicion of sympathizing with pro-freedom movements, with potential penalties including imprisonment for up to five years.

In a statement posted on X, Mufti described the invocation of the ordinance as “deeply concerning” and a “major breach of justice.” She argued that such outdated laws, with their severe punishments, are not only incompatible with the values of justice but also violate human rights principles.

Mufti highlighted that efforts to address security concerns in the region should not undermine constitutional rights or the rule of law, expressing concern over the ongoing legal and administrative strategies employed by the Indian government in Kashmir.
