Ministry of Industries Recommends Import of Urea Fertilizer to Stabilize Prices for Kharif Season 2024

Islamabad, The Ministry of Industries and Production has recommended importing 0.200 million metric tons of urea fertilizer to stabilize prices and ensure a steady supply during Kharif season 2024. The recommendation was made during a meeting of the Fertilizer Review Committee, following an analysis of consumption patterns, available stock, and future needs for the upcoming season.

According to Press Information Department, the Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, noted that the demand for urea fertilizer has increased by 3.6% compared to the previous year. The estimated demand for the Kharif season is approximately 3,442 metric tons, with the current available stock at around 3,192 metric tons. To address the shortfall, the ministry proposed importing 0.200 million metric tons and increasing production at local fertilizer plants.

All local urea fertilizer plants are expected to operate at full capacity to meet the increased demand. The government is ensuring a smooth gas supply to the fertilizer industry to facilitate this production boost. The Federal Minister also stated that the proposed import aims to ensure food security in the country, enhancing the productivity of Pakistan’s farmers.

Rana Tanveer Hussain mentioned that the timely import of urea fertilizer would significantly reduce prices and stabilize the local market. The final decision to import urea fertilizer will be taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in its next meeting.

The move is designed to support the country’s agriculture sector and ensure that farmers have access to the necessary resources to maintain productivity during the crucial Kharif season.
