Modi Government Shuts Down Social Media Accounts of Kashmiri Leader

Islamabad, In a move that highlights ongoing efforts to suppress dissent in the region, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has deactivated the social media accounts of Muhammad Farooq Rehmani, a leading Kashmiri Hurriyat leader and the former convener of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference AJK chapter.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Rehmani, known for his outspoken criticism of India’s policies in Kashmir, reported that his accounts on platforms such as (X), formerly known as Twitter, and Facebook, were targeted for deactivation. He specifically noted that his (X) account had been deactivated in both India and the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir, while his Facebook profile was initially hacked before being deactivated.

Rehmani has publicly condemned these actions, viewing them as a direct attack on freedom of speech and an effort by the Indian government to stifle the voices of Kashmiri individuals. He highlighted that this incident is part of a broader crackdown on political activities and freedom of movement within Kashmir. Moreover, it has been disclosed that the Urdu (X) account of the Kashmir Media Service news agency has also faced suspension under the Modi administration.
