Monsoon Measures for Archaeological Sites in Sindh

Karachi, September 10, 2012 (PPI-OT): Archaeological Wing of Culture Department, Government of Sindh, attaches utmost importance and priority to the archaeological remains in Sindh, including Mohenjo-Daro, Makli Hill Monuments, Bhanbhore, etc.

Mohtrama, Sassui Palejo, Minister Culture, Sindh and Mr. Abdul Aziz Uqaili, Secretary, Culture Department had held pre-monsoon meeting and had observed that under the overall supervision of Technical Consultative Committee, Mohenjo-Daro was meted-out special treatment.

The steps taken include all vulnerable areas stabilized, all drains / outlets / drainage devices cleared, all dewatering machines put to ‘ready’ condition, mud-capping provided on the top of walls, mud-pushtas provided to late period of structures, leveling done at previously noticed gullies, gullies stabilized by burnt brick- flooring and pointing carried out for sound bonding of weak structures.

Mohtrama, Sassui Palejo, Minister Culture, Sindh and Mr. Abdul Aziz Uqaili, Secretary, Culture Department reviewed situation during monsoon season again and observed that above pre-cautionary measures had proved to be successful and that effective co-ordination is being maintained with Mr. Asadullah Abro, Deputy Commissioner, Larkana and all manpower available is in stand by position round-the-clock.

The rain water is not being allowed to turn into stagnant water, but it is being drained of quickly and hurriedly by applying sucktion methods powered by Generators and other local manual methods, as it is not possible to make use of heavy machinery on these old remains.

All pre-cautionary measures have also been taken to avert chance of damage to all archaeological remains in Sindh.

A Master Plan of the site is under preparation, which will address all issues on permanent basis.
