Islamabad: Mushaal Hussein Malik, Chairperson of the Peace and Culture Organization and spouse of jailed Kashmiri leader Yasin Malik, has sharply criticized the international community for its silence on the alleged use of sexual violence by Indian forces as a weapon of war in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
According to Kashmir Media Service, Malik issued a statement on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, expressing concern over the ongoing violence in IIOJK. She accused Indian forces of using sexual violence as a means to suppress dissent, particularly targeting women. Malik urged United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to not only observe the day but also to raise awareness about the violence in IIOJK and take action to stop it.
Malik pointed out the significant humanitarian impact of the conflict, noting that over 30,000 women have been widowed and more than 90,000 children orphaned due to the actions of Indian forces in Kashmir. She claimed that thousands of women have faced sexual violence, including gang rapes and abductions, often occurring in the presence of male family members.
Highlighting the lack of accountability, Malik referenced the Kunan Poshpora mass rape incident of 1991, which remains unresolved despite numerous efforts for justice. She lamented the lack of international response and called for urgent intervention from the United Nations and human rights organizations to hold India accountable for these actions.
