National Accountability Bureau arrests former Inspector General Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for alleged misappropriation

Islamabad, November 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has arrested former IG Police KPK, Malik Naveed. He will be produced before Accountability Court tomorrow for obtaining his physical remand.

Malik Naveed has been arrested for alleged misappropriation in a Rs. 7 billion procurement deal of arms etc, for the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) police. He was accused for embezzlement, kickbacks and misuse of authority. The accused person in connivance with other senior police officers, members of purchase committee caused Rs. 1.8 billion loss to the national exchequer.

It is pertinent to mention here that NAB had already arrested two persons including Arshad Majeed, a contractor and Javed Khan, a budget officer. Mr. Arshad Majeed has opted Voluntary Return (VR) and deposited Rs. 102 million to NAB.

NAB had authorized an inquiry against Police Officers of KP and others in 2009-10 for alleged involvement in purchasing of arms, ammunition, related equipment and vehicles for the provincial police force.

During inquiry, it was revealed that gross violation of procurement rules were committed by the purchase committee in awarding tenders to favourite contractors who had no previous experience of supplying such items and for which payments were made in advance.
