OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir Reviews Regional Concerns in Banjul

Islamabad, The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir convened on May 5, 2024, in Banjul, The Gambia, during the 15th Islamic Summit, discussing the political, security, and human rights situations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting was chaired by the OIC Assistant Secretary General (Political Affairs) and the Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Jammu and Kashmir, Yousaf-Al-Dobeay. Attendees included member states such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Niger, and Azerbaijan, along with representatives from the Kashmiri people and officials from the OIC-Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, leading the Pakistan delegation, detailed the alleged efforts by India to suppress the Kashmiri population, including the denial of fundamental rights and the fostering of a climate of fear and intimidation. Dar called on the international community to address provocative statements by Indian leaders and to urge India to comply with relevant UN Security Council resolutions regarding political prisoners, political freedoms, and demographic policies.

The Contact Group reaffirmed the significance of the Jammu and Kashmir issue within the OIC agenda, supporting the Kashmiri demand for self-determination and advocating for a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
