OIC’S chairperson for IPHRC apprised of HR abuses in IOK

Srinagar, March 16, 2014 (PPI-OT): Kashmiri delegation held a meeting with Ambassador Mohammad Kawu Ibrahim, the Chairperson of International Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) of OIC, on the sidelines of the 25th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva and apprised him about the latest situation of occupied Kashmir.

The delegation comprising Hurriyet leaders, Altaf Hussain Wani, Ishtiyaq Hameed and Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, Sardar Amjad Yousaf Khan, the Executive Director of Kashmir Institute of International Affairs (KIIR) and Ahmed Qureshi, the Executive Director of Youth Forum for Kashmir (YFK), met Ambassador Mohammad Kawu Ibrahim at the Palais des Nations, the UN office in Geneva.

On the occasion, Altaf Hussain Wani congratulated Ambassador Ibrahim on assuming Chairmanship of the Commission, which will act as OIC’s agency responsible for monitoring human rights issues worldwide.

He informed the IPHRC Chairperson about the mission of the Kashmiri delegation at the UN in Geneva. He also explained KIIR’s role in documenting and reporting human rights violations by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir, and how the complaints received from Kashmiris inside and outside the occupied territory were verified and then submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva every year.

Ambassador Ibrahim appreciated the role of the Kashmiri delegation and explained IPHRC’s mandate on Israel-occupied Palestine. He said that the IPHRC had devised a mechanism to work on Palestine and was in the process to develop a similar mechanism for Kashmir. He discussed with the delegation possible methods for IPHRC to take up complaints of human rights violations in occupied Kashmir.
