Pakistan and India Conduct Biannual Prisoner List Exchange

Islamabad: In a routine exercise based on the Consular Access Agreement of 2008, Pakistan and India today exchanged lists of prisoners held in each other’s custody. This exchange, which occurs every January 1 and July 1, aims to facilitate the process of consular access and ensure the rights of detained individuals are maintained.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pakistan provided a list containing 254 Indian or presumed Indian prisoners, alongside details of 38 missing defence personnel from conflicts dating back to 1965 and 1971. Conversely, India handed over a list of 452 Pakistani or presumed Pakistani prisoners. The exchange underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to address humanitarian issues and reinforce procedural transparency between the two nations.

Furthermore, the Pakistani government has reiterated its call for the immediate release and repatriation of all Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences in India. It has also requested special consular access for prisoners facing physical and mental challenges to expedite the verification of their national status. These efforts are part of a broader commitment to resolve humanitarian issues swiftly and uphold the well-being of nationals detained abroad.
