Islamabad: Pakistan has stated that India’s decision to hold the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance is a clear violation of international law, the treaty’s provisions, and fundamental principles of inter-state relations.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to media queries regarding the Indian Home Minister’s assertion that the Indus Waters Treaty will never be restored. The spokesperson highlighted that the statement reflects a blatant disregard for the sanctity of international agreements.
He emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty is an international treaty rather than a political arrangement, and it does not include any provision for unilateral action. The spokesperson warned that such conduct sets a reckless and dangerous precedent, undermining the credibility of international agreements and raising serious questions about the reliability and trustworthiness of a state that openly refuses to fulfill its legal obligations.
The spokesperson further criticized India’s approach, describing the act of weaponizing water for political ends as irresponsible and contrary to the established norms of responsible state behavior. He urged India to immediately rescind its unilateral and unlawful stance and restore the full and unhindered implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Pakistan is firmly committed to the treaty and intends to take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and entitlements under the treaty.
