Pakistan Seeks Enhanced Commonwealth Cooperation in Climate and Education

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari today advocated for strengthened ties with the Commonwealth, focusing on crucial areas such as climate change, education, and disaster preparedness. This call was made during a meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland and her delegation in Islamabad.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, “President Zardari expressed the importance of increased collaboration among parliamentary bodies and educational exchanges to deepen ties with Commonwealth nations.” He emphasized Pakistan’s foundational role in the Commonwealth and its ongoing commitment to leveraging this platform for multilateral cooperation.

The discussions also addressed the severe impacts of climate change on Pakistan, with President Zardari highlighting the construction of two million flood-resilient houses by the Sindh Government in response to the 2022 floods. Secretary-General Scotland acknowledged the challenges Pakistan faces due to climate change and commended its efforts in combating these issues.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation within the Commonwealth framework, especially in tackling the adverse effects of climate change and strengthening educational and parliamentary exchanges.
