Pakistan’s President and Prime Minister Advocate for Journalist Safety and Press Freedom

Islamabad, On World Press Freedom Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued statements calling for enhanced measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists, emphasizing the vital role of free reporting in democratic societies.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, both leaders expressed their commitment to protecting journalists and enabling them to report without fear. President Zardari highlighted the importance of an independent press in combating misinformation and acting as a societal watchdog. He stressed the media’s role in raising awareness about critical global issues such as climate change and pollution.

Prime Minister Sharif, in his message, underscored the foundational role of press freedom and expression in democracy and civil rights protection. He called for a collaborative effort among media and other stakeholders to foster a conducive atmosphere for media operations, affirming the government’s belief in media freedom as a pillar of democratic stability.

Both leaders assured that their administrations are dedicated to supporting the media industry and addressing the challenges it faces, with the aim of bolstering the industry’s role in societal development and governance.
