Srinagar: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to submit a bill in the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) assembly that seeks to impose a total ban on alcohol in the region. This initiative targets the prohibition of all aspects of alcoholic beverages in the Muslim-majority area, from production to consumption.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the bill is set to be introduced by Fayaz Ahmad, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Kupwara. The proposed legislation aims to prohibit the advertisement, sale, purchase, consumption, and manufacture of alcoholic beverages within the region.
The introduction of the bill is scheduled for the upcoming budget session of the IIOJK assembly. The move aligns with the PDP’s broader agenda to address social issues in the region, though it may face challenges given the economic impact on businesses reliant on alcohol sales.
