Peshawar Meat Testing Lab Upgraded to International Standards with UNIDO and JICA Support

Peshawar, The United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the Japan International Cooperation Agency inaugurated the upgraded Meat Testing Lab in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, enhancing its capabilities to meet international food safety standards. The event marked a significant step in the PAFAID project, aimed at fostering agri-food and agro-industry development in the region.

According to United Nations Pakistan, the ceremony featured key speeches by Dr. Amber Ali Khan, Secretary of the Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Department of KP, and Dr. Asal Khan, Director General of L and DD (Ext) KP. Dr. Amber highlighted the project’s impact on the local meat and livestock sectors, attributing the advancements to the collaboration between UNIDO, JICA, and local authorities. He emphasized the importance of continuing partnerships to achieve sustainable industrial development in KP.

The PAFAID project, a four-year initiative funded by JICA, is part of a broader effort by UNIDO to implement pilot applications of compliance capacities and value-addition practices in KP’s cattle meat value chain, as well as the apple value chain in Balochistan. The project not only focuses on enhancing food safety but also aims at improving overall public health through better food handling practices.
